This year’s campaign will focus on the theme “SEPSIS”
The World PICU Awareness Week Committee exists to raise awareness about #PedsICU in general and any important themes impacting the specialty by engaging members and key stakeholders in awareness and advocacy activities at a global and regional level. This 7 day event culminates in World PICU Awareness Day on the 2nd Friday of May, annually.
This year’s campaign will focus on the theme “SEPSIS”
World PICU Awareness Week 2023 centered on Sepsis, one of the most urgent and complex challenges in paediatric critical care. Through regionally led initiatives, webinars, and podcasts, teams across the globe explored the realities of sepsis prevention, recognition, and management in diverse healthcare settings. The week concluded with a World PICU Day podcast in collaboration with OPENPediatrics, featuring regional experts sharing successes, challenges, and lessons learned in the implementation of sepsis guidelines around the world.
Across all regions, early detection and timely intervention were emphasized as the most critical steps in improving survival rates and outcomes for children with sepsis.
Each region revealed unique perspectives shaped by local realities—from resource limitations to varying infection patterns—demonstrating that effective sepsis management must adapt to cultural, social, and systemic contexts.
Whether through shared guidelines, joint research, or cross-continental discussions, global cooperation remains essential to strengthening sepsis care and reducing preventable deaths in paediatric intensive care units worldwide.
Regional experts from Africa shared their knowledge about sepsis prevention, social determinants, early recognition, and management.
Sepsis is a life-threatening condition that requires immediate attention and treatment in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). While sepsis management protocols exist, it is important to understand that the Asian perspective of sepsis management in the PICU is unique.
This webinar, we will explore the various cultural, social, and economic factors that influence the approach to sepsis management in Asian PICUs. The speakers will share the challenges faced by healthcare providers in Asian countries and how they adapt to these unique situations.
One significant factor that differentiates the Asian perspective is the lack of resources and infrastructure. Many PICUs in Asian countries have limited access to equipment, medications, and trained personnel. As a result, healthcare providers in these settings often have to improvise and use unconventional methods to manage sepsis.
Additionally, the prevalence of infectious diseases in Asian countries may also impact the management of sepsis in the PICU. Healthcare providers must be knowledgeable about these diseases and their unique presentations to make accurate diagnoses and provide appropriate treatment.
You will hear from experts in the field of PICU and sepsis management from various Asian countries, who will share their experiences and insights on the unique challenges faced by healthcare providers in their respective countries. Attendees will gain a better understanding of the Asian perspective on sepsis management in the PICU and how to adapt to these unique situations to provide the best possible care for their patients.
