This opening session of the WFPICCS’ Pediatric Respiratory Critical Care Series (PRCCS) explores the core physiology of gas exchange in children and its relevance to everyday PICU practice. Through a practical, physiology-driven approach, the webinar will review the determinants of alveolar gas exchange and ventilation–perfusion relationships. Participants will learn to interpret key clinical indicators, recognize the major mechanisms of impaired gas exchange in critically ill children, and apply these principles to common PICU scenarios. The session will also examine the impact of mechanical ventilation strategies and monitoring tools on gas exchange, guiding evidence-based interventions to optimize oxygenation and ventilation in critically ill children.
