Breath by breath: the real science of gas exchange

WFPICCS’ Pediatric Respiratory Critical Care Series (PRCCS)

This opening session of the WFPICCS’ Pediatric Respiratory Critical Care Series (PRCCS) explores the core physiology of gas exchange in children and its relevance to everyday PICU practice. Through a practical, physiology-driven approach, the webinar will review the determinants of alveolar gas exchange and ventilation–perfusion relationships. Participants will learn to interpret key clinical indicators, recognize the major mechanisms of impaired gas exchange in critically ill children, and apply these principles to common PICU scenarios. The session will also examine the impact of mechanical ventilation strategies and monitoring tools on gas exchange, guiding evidence-based interventions to optimize oxygenation and ventilation in critically ill children.

Objective

To build a clinically relevant understanding of pediatric gas-exchange physiology and its disturbances in critical illness, enabling participants to accurately assess gas-exchange efficiency, interpret bedside monitoring and blood gas data, and apply physiology-driven, evidence-based strategies to optimize oxygenation and ventilation in critically ill children.

Key takeaways

Core Physiology Matters at the Bedside

Participants will gain a clear understanding of oxygen and carbon dioxide transport, ventilation–perfusion relationships, and the determinants of alveolar gas exchange in children.

Patterns Explain Pathology

Learners will be able to recognize mechanisms of impaired gas exchange – including shunt, dead space, diffusion limitation, and hypoventilation – and interpret key clinical indicators across common PICU scenarios.

Physiology Guides Smarter Interventions

Participants will learn how to use gas-exchange principles, monitoring tools, and ventilation strategies to make evidence-based decisions that optimize oxygenation and ventilation while minimizing harm.
