Setting the Ventilator in pARDS – The First Six Hours

WFPICCS’ Pediatric Respiratory Critical Care Series (PRCCS)

Join us on 17 September 2026 for Session 9 of the WFPICCS Pediatric Respiratory Critical Care Series (PRCCS) as we explore “Setting the Ventilator in pARDS – The First Six Hours” and discuss practical approaches to early ventilator management in children with pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome.
In this engaging session, our Expert Speaker, Dr. Vicent Modesto i Alapont, will explore key considerations when setting the ventilator during the crucial first hours of pARDS, with a focus on supporting thoughtful, patient-specific bedside decision-making.
Our Guest Faculty, Dr. Reinout Mildner, will add expert insights and practical perspectives to this important discussion.
Key Learning Objectives include:
  1. Briefly discuss the identification and classification of pediatric ARDS (pARDS), and use this grading to guide how aggressive initial ventilator settings should be.
  2. Choose the first ventilator settings. Mode, tidal volume, plateau pressure, driving pressure.
  3. Initial PEEP titration and FiO2 to oxygenation targets, and decide how much hypercapnia to accept.
  4. Reassess at six hours. Check compliance and driving pressure, then decide on proning, paralysis, escalation, or ECMO referral.
