The 11th World Congress of the World Federation of Pediatric Intensive & Critical Care Societies (WFPICCS) was held virtually from Cape Town, South Africa, from 12 to 16 July 2022. Based in the heart of the African continent, the Congress embraced the theme of “Ubuntu,” an Nguni term meaning “I am because we are,” reflecting a commitment to community, compassion, and collaboration across borders.
In response to the global Covid-19 pandemic and its ongoing challenges, the Congress was held online to ensure broad accessibility and safety for participants worldwide. This virtual format allowed global delegates to engage with the program while reducing financial and environmental burdens.
WFPICCS 2022 featured a robust scientific agenda that covered the latest developments in pediatric intensive and critical care, spanning basic science, bedside practice, and global health issues. The program included daily plenary sessions, interactive workshops, and roundtable discussions, bringing together experts from diverse professional and geographical backgrounds. Emerging researchers were also given the opportunity to present their work and contribute to critical dialogue within the field.
The Congress was designed for the entire interprofessional pediatric critical care community, including physicians, nurses, scientists, and allied health professionals. A strong focus was placed on advocacy and the urgent need to strengthen pediatric intensive care services across Africa.
In addition to its academic offerings, the Congress featured a vibrant social program delivered online, providing attendees with opportunities to connect informally and experience elements of South Africa’s rich cultural heritage.
Rooted in Cape Town, known as the “Mother City,” this Congress highlighted both the challenges and opportunities facing pediatric critical care across the continent and the world. WFPICCS 2022 successfully brought the global community together under the spirit of Ubuntu to share knowledge, build partnerships, and strive for better outcomes for critically ill children everywhere.
