Invitation to Participate in the Pediatric Critical Illness Outcomes Study (PECIOS)

WFPICCS is pleased to share the invitation to participate in the Pediatric Critical Illness Outcomes Study (PECIOS) – an international, multicenter, point-prevalence and cohort study designed to determine the prevalence, care, and outcomes of critical illness in hospitalized children across diverse healthcare settings worldwide.

PECIOS is coordinated by Assoc. Prof. Tim Baker and a global team of clinical and research experts from Muhimbili University (Tanzania), Karolinska Institute (Sweden), and partner institutions. The study aims to include over 200 hospitals in at least 40 countries, enrolling 16,000 pediatric patients aged 0–18 years.

The study will establish the proportion of hospitalized children who are critically ill, assess 7-day mortality among critically and non-critically ill patients, estimate the provision of Essential Emergency and Critical Care (EECC), and evaluate facility-level resources available for EECC.

PECIOS will provide the first global estimates of the burden of pediatric critical illness using pragmatic criteria, its association with mortality, and the current provision of EECC for children. The findings will support decision-makers, hospital managers, and health system planners in allocating resources and improving the quality of care for critically ill children worldwide.

Hospitals from all regions and resource settings are encouraged to join this important global initiative.
