Tiffany Mullen is the Clinical Nurse Specialist for the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Children’s Mercy Kansas City in Kansas City, Missouri. She received her Masters of Nursing from University of Missouri and undergraduate degrees in Psychology and Nursing at The University of Kansas. Tiffany has worked in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit for 15 years with the recent 8 years as a trailblazing unit-based Clinical Nurse Specialist. She has experience with a wide range of pediatric critical care populations including cardiac, medical, and surgical patients ranging from pre-term infants to adults. Tiffany has experience with extracorporeal specialty teams, caring for patients and managing circuits for standalone and tandem therapies of Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy and Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation. Her role as the Clinical Nurse Specialist includes contribution to plans of care for patients, support to bedside nurses and nursing practice, and impacting organizational and system-wide improvement efforts.

Tiffany leads and participates in many projects and committees aimed at improving patient safety and clinical outcomes. She has been integral in the expansion and growth of professional governance within her institution. She developed and leads a unit-based safety council with work expanding beyond the walls of the critical care area through collaboration and mentorship. She is a process owner of an innovative role creation aimed at CLABSI prevention initiatives. Tiffany also developed and implemented a Trauma course used to educate and credential ICU nurses in the care of pediatric trauma patients.

Tiffany is currently serving as the secretary for the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. Volunteering for professional organizations is a passion of Tiffany’s where she has participated in opportunities related to certification, moral distress, the clinical nurse specialist role, and community engagement. Networking and connecting peers with one another brings great joy to Tiffany. She started and has expanded a network of Pediatric Critical Care colleagues for five years with monthly virtual meetings and email discussion of up to 50 topics a month.
