In Case You Missed It: When Blood Meets Air – Understanding V/Q Matching and Shunt Physiology in the PICU

The World Federation of Pediatric Intensive & Critical Care Societies (WFPICCS) successfully delivered the second session of the Pediatric Respiratory Critical Care Series (PRCCS), bringing together participants from 52 countries worldwide.

This webinar, titled “When Blood Meets Air: V/Q Matching & Shunt Mysteries,” focused on ventilation–perfusion mismatch, shunt physiology, and dead space ventilation as key mechanisms of hypoxemia in critically ill children. Through a structured, physiology-driven approach, the session translated core respiratory principles into practical bedside reasoning.

Participants revisited how to interpret oxygenation indices and arterial blood gases, differentiate between ventilation and perfusion problems, and apply targeted respiratory management strategies in the PICU. Emphasis was placed on clinical pattern recognition and decision-making in complex hypoxemic states.

WFPICCS extends its sincere thanks to Dr. Briseida Mema, MD, FRCPSC, MHPE and Dr. Karthi Nallasamy, MD, DM for delivering an insightful and clinically relevant session, as well as to the organizing team for their continued dedication to high-quality global education.
