Pediatric Respiratory Critical Care Series with a Focus on Gas Exchange

WFPICCS is pleased to announce the opening session of the Pediatric Respiratory Critical Care Series (PRCCS), a new educational webinar series designed to strengthen core knowledge and clinical decision-making in pediatric intensive care.

The first webinar in the series will focus on one of the fundamental pillars of PICU practice – gas exchange – and its direct relevance to everyday clinical scenarios. Through a practical, physiology-driven approach, the session will revisit the essential mechanisms of alveolar gas exchange and ventilation–perfusion relationships, bridging foundational physiology with bedside application.

Participants will be guided through the interpretation of key clinical indicators of gas exchange efficiency and will explore the major mechanisms leading to impaired gas exchange in critically ill children. The session will also examine how mechanical ventilation strategies and commonly used monitoring tools influence oxygenation and ventilation, supporting evidence-based decision-making in the PICU.

The invited expert speaker for this webinar is Dr. Martin Kneyber, MD PhD FCCM, Chief of the Division of Paediatric Critical Care Medicine at Beatrix Children’s Hospital in Groningen. Dr. Kneyber brings extensive clinical and academic expertise in pediatric respiratory physiology and mechanical ventilation.

By the end of the webinar, participants will be better equipped to apply physiologic principles to common PICU scenarios and to optimize oxygenation and ventilation in critically ill children using an evidence-based approach.

Registration is free and now open. We invite PICU clinicians, trainees, and allied health professionals to register and join us live for the first session of this new educational series.
